Canon Changed the World of Photography

Canon Changed the World of Photography

28.05.2026

Canon is now one of the most famous brands in the world, but its story began much earlier — in 1933 in Japan.

The company’s goal was to create a high-quality Japanese camera capable of competing with the best European manufacturers. In 1934, the first prototype called Kwanon was created. The name was taken from the Buddhist goddess of mercy, reflecting the deep spiritual and ideological meaning the creators placed into their first invention. Later, the brand received a simpler and more international name — Canon.

Canon’s early years were not easy. The company did not yet have the resources that European manufacturers possessed. However, it stood out through its approach — continuous improvement, engineering precision, and a strong desire for innovation. Over time, the company became a leading manufacturer not only of cameras, but also of lenses, printers, office equipment, and various optical solutions.

Canon’s story is not only a story of business success, but also proof that great brands are born from great vision. From a small laboratory to worldwide recognition, Canon built its path through innovation, quality, and trust.
